A Marinette County resident who serves as the Town of Peshtigo Chairperson is launching a petition drive that could eventually ask voters whether the County Board should be cut in half; from 30 supervisors to 15.
Jennifer Friday says the goal is to streamline county government, reduce costs, and make individual supervisors more accountable.
Friday says Marinette County has operated with 30 supervisors since 1965. She argues changes in technology and communication, along with the county’s move to an administrator form of government, make a smaller board practical.
She also pushes back against concerns about Marinette County’s geographic size, saying representation should be considered based on population and constituents, rather than square miles.
Friday says the petition itself would not automatically reduce the board. Instead, enough valid signatures would put the issue before voters.
Friday says roughly two-thousand signatures are needed, but she plans to collect about 25 hundred to provide a cushion.
Her deadline to submit the petition is November 23rd.
If the petition qualifies, voters could decide the size of the Marinette County Board in a referendum in the spring of 2027.
